Bin this charge !
Tory dominated Rushcliffe Borough Council has voted to impose a
charge of £25 per year for the green bins garden waste collection.
This is to plug a £330,000 hole caused by Government cuts.
We voted against, along with the other opposition councillors, as
there are better ways to handle this. Greens alone called for people
on Council Tax Benefit to be exempt.
The council expects only 30% of residents to pay the charge, yet a
proposal to charge just £10 was voted down even though this would mean
a higher number of people would be prepared to pay.
We are opposed to this charge. It is simply a back-door rise in
council tax and has nothing to do with the cost of providing the
service. The council admits it will discourage recycling, result in
fly-tipping and an increase in landfill charges as garden waste is
placed in the grey bin.
